What's Your Game Of The Year?

As the year of 2008 comes into it's final, coldest month it's good to have a look back and see what brilliant game releases there were, and mainly, choose which one of these was the best game of 2008.

Throughout the whole year we've had some awesome game releases on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Nitendo Wii, however, I would have to say that the later part of the year was definately the best as there were dozens of new releases from September to November, those games have really done a good job of keeping me and millions of other gamers entertained during the year.

Here are just a few of the awesome games that have been released in the past year:

Lost Odyssey - I thought this game was pretty good, although the combat of the game was not my favorite it was still good gameplay, but also, extremely long, 4 disks, really took some time to get through it all.

Condemned 2 - Even though the game is rather brutal and not for the feint of hear, the complex puzzles and hand to hand combat makes the game really good. The game can get rather tense and dark at times which really pulls you into the game.

Battlefield: Bad Company - Bad Company is my favorite Battlefield game so far simply because it's the only one with an actual campaign. The feature of being able to blow a hole in a wall was awesome, you could be in a building and make a door out anywhere you want.

Lego Indiance Jones - I am a great fan of all of the Lego games, they are brilliant and great fun. Even though the Lego games are very short, the humour added to them is awesome.

Lego Batman - This game was really the same as Lego Indianace, just a few new features but it's still a brilliant game to play. Every one of the Lego games have been great fun to play and they are all fun for the whole family.

Civilization Revolution - I only played this game a few times on the Xbox 360 but I thought it was brilliant, alot different from any other Civilization game I've played.

Devil May Cry 4 - I know alot of people that love this game, but I don't see the amusement with it. I played the demo on the Xbox 360 and thought, "hmm, alot of jumping". I thought the game was rather repetitive, not my cup of tea really.

Mario Kart Wii - Although I am not a fan of most of the Mario games, I really liked playing this one. Especially when you use the special Wii steering wheel it makes it a great game, you can play for hours whether you're in a party or not.

GRID - I never liked this game, the graphics were very good but because you could rewind time if you crashed, I thought it ruined it.

Burnout Paradise - The only problem with this game is the repetitive factor, you do alot of races and then get a new license, once you get that license you have to repeat all of the races again, just a little bit harder to get another license. Overall I thought the game was great for a fast drive through the city but the campaign got rather repetitive after a while.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Even though I have only played this game a few times, it was immense fun when I played it. The simple controls and fast gameplay makes it really fun to play as a party. The ability to jump around as Kirby makes it a great and funny game, great in a party.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - This game consists mainly of movie scenes which after a while get boring and too long, but once you get to play the game you'll forget all about them. Once your into the game it's great fun to play and the graphics are good.

Rock Band - Amazing, I have always loved the Guitar Hero games, but when this was released I just had to get it, I loved the set list and loved the new instruments, amazing game and a must play for any music game lover.

Rock Band 2 - This game is brilliant, although it;s basically the same as Rock Band 1, it comes with a wider and more expanable set list, awesome to play and great fun in a group.

Guitar Hero World Tour - This game, like with Rock Band is a wicked game, the new instruments were brilliant but I thought the set list really dragged it down, it depends on your taste but I wasn't amazed by it.

Grand Theft Auto 4 - You can't really complain about this game, all of the other GTA's have been awesome but this one managed to top the lot. Outstanding graphics and the ability to change the way the game ends depending on the choices you make just makes it even better. Plus with the addition of new content coming next year, the game just gets deeper and better.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King - Most likely only World of Warcraft players will want to read this one, it was a great game, with a new level cap, new raid cotent, a new class and new professions. This game will keep me busy for many hours and many late nights.

Gears of War 2 - Superb, just that one word needed. The graphics of this game were absolutely amazing and the storyline was mind blowing, it's continuous action with non stop blood. This is a must buy for any Xbox 360 owner and I look forward to getting hold of the next one.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Although the game was good, and it had alot of hype before it was released, once it was, I was not totally amased by it all. The whole look and gameplay of it was awesome but the length of the storyline was not great, plus with no online play, the game was over with a few days.

Left 4 Dead - If you are afan of the Counter Strike and Half Life games, you will love this, it's created by the same people but this time it's got zombies. You work as a team of 4 to fight your way out of the city. I particularly like the emphasis the game has on team work and the realistic guns and weapons.

Fable 2 - In one way this game was awesome and in another is was ok. The entire storyline, awesome graphics and ability to change the whole game by making one decision is awesome. But the length and difficulty of the game was a let down, I found it to be alot shorter than the original Fable and it was also alot simpler as you didn't seem to face any tough bosses. Even though it has it's downsides, I still think that it's a great game.

Mirror's Edge - Some might say this is a bad game, too much like Assassins Creed, but I loved Assassins Creed. I thought Mirror's Edge was a brilliant game, the graphics of the game were outstanding, although I didn't think much of the cut scenes, they looked rather cheap comic book stuff, the gameplay was awesome and it's just a whole new style of game.

Far Cry 2 - This game was absolutely awesome, the graphics were great and the ability to change the game as you play, also while coping with malaria, it just makes the whole game more intense to play. You have a wide range of weapons to choose from all to help you gain an advantage on your enemies, plus the game features are awesome. All these things made the game absolutely great, one of the best of 2008.

Call of Duty 5: World of War - This game had alot to live up to, it had to beat CoD4 which one a number of awards this year. I didn't like it as much as CoD4 because it went back to the World Wars. But that aside, the gameplay and graphics were awesome, although I thought it didn't quite live up to the reputation left by CoD4.

All of the games listed above were really fun to play and kept me entertained all year round but it's come to tell you what my game of the year is, although it's a really difficult decision. Although it's a hard decision, I would have to say that Gear of War 2 is my game oif the year, simply because of the constant fighting and action, plus with it's great graphics and storyline, it makes it the best game of 2008. The Death Knight in the Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK - the latest World of Warcraft Expansion pack) plays the dual role of tanking and DPS. They perform these tasks as well if not better than the other classes. Blizzard has saturated this class with abilities that are both new and creative and therefore likely that players will enjoy.

The WotLK Death Knight charges in. As others beat at it, the Death Knight keeps the foe in its place soaking up damage while taking the first hit. The WotLK Death Knight might not be the class you should play if you are more into healing or ranged damage.

PvP

You’re going to have to learn how to play PVP all over again with the Death Knight. After you get used to it you can be very effective. Practice dueling and play the battlegrounds, and when you have the feel for it go ahead and join an arena team.

Raiding

Death Knights shine at raiding. They can tank as well as any class, and can put out high damage.

Builds

WotLK Death Knight talents are split into 3 categories, each of which are fully capable of supporting either a tanking or dps role:

Blood: This tree primarily amplifies the Death Knight’s melee spells, weapons, and abilities, and has a prominent health-regeneration theme.

Frost: This tree has many control elements, with a strong critical strike/bonus damage theme, as well as several talents that improve physical damage mitigation.

Unholy: As well as a strong focus on diseases and related abilities this tree also improves summoned minions. Even has spell damage shielding, mobility improvement sub-themes and AoE.

Suggested Professions

As a plate mail wearer, the WotLK Death Knight would do well to choose Blacksmithing as a profession, with Mining as a complement.

You probably won't need a gathering profession since you need to have a level 55 character to unlock a Wrath of the Lich King Death Knight. To run around with effective gear while leveling consider Blacksmithing and Enchanting as professions if you have bags of gold at your disposal.

In the short time since the Call of Duty franchise began, there have been many developers involved in working on the video game… some fleeting, some long-term.  Despite this lack of stability, the Call of Duty name remains rock solid reaching a pinnacle last year with Modern Warfare in Call of Duty 4.

Call of Duty World at War  looks good… Damn Good!

Treyarch is building on the foundation set by the Modern Warfare engine, but the studio has been given an unprecedented amount of time to work on the new title.2009 will prove that the vetran team behind Call of Duty have quite possibly created the best FPS ever.

The last Call of Duty 4 was all about Modern Warefare... In this version of Call of Duty, you experience World War II episodes with Japanese and German death scenes set in lush jungles instead of tight cramped trenches.   The Japanese forces are programmed to focus on infiltration and ambush tactics along with Banzai charges, ambush attacks, and even kamikaze fighters which were unlike anything the American forces ever dealt with during the European Theater.

Technically and graphically, the game looks fantastic - as impressive as the viuals of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.  Everything has been amped up thanks to the COD 4 engine.  Realistic physics, destructible environments, and even small considerations, such as trajectory changes when firing into water, help give the impression of an already polished product.

The awesome new flamethrower weapon can cause much damage but also provide a tactical advantage when used properly.  The flames of the flamethrower in Call of Duty World at War burns all foliage in its path, scorched the ground, spread based on wind patterns and undergrowth.

The two exclusive missions that were demonstrated live at Treyar headquarters was a mission on the Pacific campaign which included .50 caliber machine guns on either side of a PBY Catalina boat plane to take out the Japancese merchant fleet below.  This mission showcased some of the massive destruction possible in the game. 

This is the best Call of Duty game so far.  Keep an eye out for it.

Which Game Will Be A Rock Legend

Ever since their first Guitar Hero game release, Activision and RedOctane, publishers of Guitar Hero have been the top players in the music game industry, until just 2 years after their first game, Rock Band was released into America, this then became a mighty competitor.

The developers of the first 2 Guitar Hero games were Harmonix, but after they released their second Guitar Hero game, they moved onto a new publisher, MTV Games and EA. Once Harmonix had left, new guys Neversoft moved in and started to create a new game, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock which was released in the later part of 2007. The game proved to be a great success, until later that year Harmonix came back into the business with Rock Band. This game featured a whole new range of instruments including a guitar, drum set, bass and mic.

After a year of Rock Band being released, the competition started again. Both EA and Activision released their new games within the same month, November 2008. Guitar Hero World Tour from Activision and Rock Band 2 from EA, let battle commence.

From Guitar Hero's view, this was a new venture for them, a new range of instruments, but they certainly hadn't cut any corners. Guitar Heros new guitar features a touch sensitive bar which allows finger tapping during song sections and their drums also features 1 extra pad than the Rock Band drums. Aswell as a whole new range of shiny instruments, the game features a music maker where you can create and share your own songs.

From the Rock Band 2 side, Harmonix have not changed the instrument set up much. Harmonix only made 2 changes to the drums, they made the peddle metal instead of plastic to make it stronger, they also changed the drums to velocity sensitive, basically, the harder you hit on the pads, the louder the sound you get in the game. Apart from those few changes, not alot has changed instrument wise.

On the actual game side of things, they haven't got a music maker, however, they do have one great thing that Guitar Hero does not; a huge selection of downloadable songs on top of their 80+ song set list. This also gets better, if you have previously bought any Rock Band 1 songs, they are all compatible with Rock Band 2 and they all appear on your setlist when you load up the game. Another advantage is that for a small fee of less than $5, you can tranfser most of the songs from Rock Band 1 onto Rock Band 2.

Now comes the difficult decision, after each game has had its advantages listed, it comes to deciding which ones you should spend your money on. With all the economic problems, many people will only have the money for one of these games, plus the space for only 1 set of instruments.

Because both sets of instruments are compatiable with either game, many people will be deciding whether they want the new features and suited up instruments of Guitar Hero or the large expandable set list and experiance of Rock Band.

Even though Harmonix have more experiance in this type of game, the stage is clearly open and we'll have to see which game will come out on top.
